If you can't wait for traffic to your new web site, your only option is pay per click. Pay per click refers to paying for every click to your web site. With pay per click there is no waiting, unless you count waiting a day for your pay per click account to be approved.
The 2 most prominent pay per click search engines are Overture and Google AdWords.
Overture's search results show up as sponsored listing on search engines like Yahoo, Alta Vista, CNN.com, InfoSpace and MSN. You can expect to get a ton of targeted traffic to your site because you only pay for the terms that would normally be used to find your site. After you set up your account with Overture, you pick the keywords you want your site to show up for and how much you are willing to pay per click. One of the tools that Oveture offers to help you pick these keywords is their "Keyword Selector Tool". Simply type in a keyword or keyword phrase, and the results that are displayed are related search terms and how many times those terms were searched in the last month. This will also give you any idea of what kind of cost you may incur. If your search term has been search a few hundred thousand times in the last month, you can be assured that the term is not going to be cheap.
Google's AdWords program works a little differently. If you have done a search on Google I am sure you have seen the listings that appear on the right column. Those are the AdWord results. Googles's AdWords also show up on EarthLink, AOL, and Ask Jeeves. Along with showing up on those search engines, Google has a program called AdSense. This allows website owners to sign up for an account and display Google AdWords on their site. The receive a portion of the click price for doing so. Google is said by many to be the most used search engine out there. When combined with a high number of AdWords publishers you can be assured to gain a viable amount of traffic by using Google AdWords.
As the old addage goes, "You get what you pay for," be careful when you start using pay per click. If you are bidding on a highly searched keyword you can blow through a few hundred bucks in a few hours. Believe me I have done it.
